Pajama Day

Grade Levels: 3rd and 4th

Subjects: Language Arts, Art, Library, and Technology

Learner Outcomes: The students will participate in an all day READ-IN. On this day we will be involved in a variety of enjoyable reading activities. The students will be reading silently and orally, writing in journals or diaries, listening to bedtime stories and poems, watching videos on popular books, viewing educational TV Language Arts Programs, reading from children's magazines and comics and listening to surprise guest readers. The students will be able to develop a positive school atmosphere, which encourages them to behave in a safe, courteous, and responsible manner.

Time Frame: 1 day

Materials: books listed below, mask worksheet, crayons, scissors, yarn, snack (popcorn and root beer), white copying paper, direction sheets for making an airplane, pencils, and writing paper

Technology Tools/Courseware: Computer with Windows 95/98, printer, word processor software, animated books software, Internet, projection device, cassette/CD player, TV, VCR, Digital/35mm Camera

Teacher Notes:

In order to create an atmosphere of relaxed reading, have the students bring in pajamas or a sweatsuit to school to wear this day. They will also need a pillow and a blanket or sleeping bag.

A letter needs to go home to parents with the following information: a brief description about the day (taken from the Learner Outcomes above), the date of the Pajama Day, what grades or teachers will participate, bring in their favorite stuffed animal, and what clothes to wear.

The teacher should dress in pajamas or something appropriate for the day.

If you cannot find the books listed below, substitute any books in their place.

Capture the day's activities using a digital or 35mm camera and post on a bulletin board.

Procedures: 1. At least two days before this Pajama Day takes place send out a memo to parents stating the information under teacher notes.

2. On Pajama Day move all desks and tables to the side of the room or out in the hall. The students will be sitting or lying on the floor on their blankets or sleeping bags.
